Printers can be categorized in a number of ways.
There are inkjet and laser printers. Inkjet printers use ink cartridges while laser printers use laser toner cartridges.
Also, printers can be classified as colored or black.
Ones that work and ones that don't? There are a lot more than two categories of printers. Some of the ones I can think of just off the top of my head include...
receipt printers
band printers
daisywheel printers
dot matrix impact printers
pen plotters
thermal printers
desktop inkjet printers
laser printers
wide-format inkjet printers
grand-format inkjet printers
electrostatic printers
photographic printers
dye sublimation printers
And then there's the ink...aqueous, eco-solvent, mild solvent, aggressive solvent, oil-former...
I believe that if the question is "What are the two major categories of printers?" then there are just that, two categories of printers. While most of the above may be true, they all fall under the same "TWO" categories. Perhaps Jmowreader, you need to read the question a little closer. Not all that you find on the internet is true unless it has a viable source. My source for the following is the college textbook titled A+ Guide to Hardware: Managing, Maintaining, and Troubleshooting FOURTH EDITION by Jean Andrews ISBN-13: 978-0-619-21762-4
You can visit the website listed in the related links and search the book if you do not believe it to be a reliable source.
The two categories are the following:
The "viable source" I used was all the printers I've worked with.
There should actually be FIVE categories of printers, if you want to try to make neat little groups out of unbelievably disparate kinds of printers.
Impact, Printer Marking (something like a dot matrix printer with a ribbon in it)
Impact, Media Marking (an impact printer where the media changes colors in response to being struck--the machines big companies use to print paychecks are this class)
Non-impact, Printer Marking (inkjet and laser printers fall into this class)
Non-impact, Media Marking (thermal printers, and anything that exposes photoreceptive media like photo paper or film)
Plotters (a device that places a pen or a blade on the surface of the media, then drags the tool to cut or draw)
inkjet and laserjet
impact & non-impact

Do you mean: "Do laser printers print in color?"?There are two types of laser printers:1. Black&White Laser Printers - they DON'Tprint in color.2. Color Laser Printers - they DO print in color.
The old laser printers used He-Ne laser , and the modern laser printers use infrared laser .
Ink jet printers are a very common alternative to laser printers. There are printers that use an LED instead of a laser. They work the same as a laser printer but are cheaper.

HP does, in fact, manufacturer laser printers. HP's line of laser printers is named "Laser Jet," these are quality printers by most standards. Laser Jet is a brand that as been around for some time now.
Inkjet printers are predated by laser printers and laser printers as well as inkjet printers have several different types of printers to choose from.
Laser printers are cheaper to use over ink jet printers. ink jet printers print faster than laser printers as they need to heat up and laser printers are a better quality print.
The two main types of printers in use today are laser printers and inkjet printers. The HP P1102w is an example of an entry level black and white laser printer, while HP's 8600 is a higher end personal use inkjet printer.
That is the printer type. Ink jet printers take ink cartridges and laser printers take laser toner cartridges.
One of the advantages of using a Xerox Laser printer are it is easy to troubleshoot a Xerox Laser printer whereas other printers you may have to call a professional. Another is quick printing speed.
Laser jet printers can easily be found wherever printers are sold. Some retailers who carry laser jet printers are Walmart, Office Depot, and Staples.
