Probably the U-joints.
The original u-joint is held in place by a plastic lock ring on each cap. I heat the end caps with a torch until the plastic oozes out then use a u-joint press to press the joint out. The replacement joint comes with metal lock rings.

U-joint is the first place to look. Second would be worn ring and pinion gear.
It has two universal joints (u-joints) in the driveshaft that powers the rear wheels.
There is no cover around a u joint.
There are three u-joints on an 88 suburban. These joints are located in the rear wheel drive of the vehicle.
Most likely a bad U-joint at either end of the shaft...when the shaft turns suddenly, the noise you hear is from the shaft and the u-joint suddenly making contact...
Well, if it is a front driveshaft, the issue is a CV joint and you'll have to remove the driveshaft and take it in to be rebuilt. Taht will run you $150 or more. If it is a rear driveshaft, it will be cheaper if you remove the driveshaft and take it to a driveline shop where they can press in a new u-joint.....I'd recommend you replace both. A guess? $60 to $80
If the u-joint has never been changed you can't grease them because factory u-joints don't have grease alimites...you will have to change the u-joint. After market u-joints have alimites.
