The Vice President of the United States serves as President of the Senate and may break tie votes in the Senate.

The Vice President also becomes the new President if the President dies, resigns, or is removed from office.

Those are his only duties under the Constitution, but it has become customary for the president to ask the vice-president to take on special assignments on behalf of the President or to represent the President at special events.
Under the Constitution, the Vice president has only two responsibilities:

  1. Become President if the President dies in office, and
  2. Serve as President of the US Senate.

The Vice President's most important job is to take over if the current president passes away, resigns, or is removed from office. Under the Constitution, the Vice President is President of the Senate. As President of the Senate, they may have to cast a tie breaking vote.

To preside over the senate and to replace the president in case the president dies or becomes unable to fulfill his duties.

These days though, the Vice President is pretty much just a Public Relations person. (EX: Biden giving speeches to try to gain support for Obama's healthcare bill.

What are the requirements to be vice president?

While the main body of the constitution does not lay out any requirements for the vice-presidency, the amendments most certainly do.The final paragraph of the twelfth amendment reads:But no person constitutionally ineligible to the office of President shall be eligible to that of Vice-President of the United States. Therefore, the Vice-President must be constitutionally eligible for the Presidency. These requirements are that they must be a natural born citizen of the United States, that they be no less than thirty five years old, and that they have been a resident of the United States for at least fourteen years. For this reason, somebody such as Arnold Schwarzenegger would not be eligible to run as Vice President, because while he is over thirty five and has lived in the USA for longer than fourteen years, he was not born a US citizen.
