No. Colombia was named for the huge dove population found there

by the first Europeans (Spanish) to visit that part oF South America.

Doves are members of the Columbidae family (pigeons and doves in the order Columbiformes.

In the Spanish language Cristopher Columbus is known as Colon;

if the Spanish named a country after him it should be Colonia, but the

original reason has been lost to time and anglicization.

Yes, Colombia was named after Christopher Columbus.

On his third voyage to the Spanish West Indies, Christopher Columbus mentioned that the southern area of Hispanola (probably Venezuela or Colombia) was beautiful, and he set up a colony in that place. When he died, King Fernidad IV of Spain decided to name Colombia after the Spanish name for Columbus, Colombo.

Vespucci probably named Colombia after Columbus because it was the first land in South America discovered by Europe (by Columbus).
Remember, the rest of the "known world" was unaware of any land that was to the west of them.
Columbus didn't believe that he discovered new land at first, he believed he was in Eastern India.
Hence the name "Native American Indians".
So Colombia is probably named in honor of Columbus's discovery of the "New World". :)

Columbus is credited with making the European discovery of America, of which Columbia is a part. So in a sense he can be said to have discovered Columbia. However, Columbus never traveled to the lands that are now part of Columbia.

Because he found the Island. Or at least he thought he did. Native Americans found it first and they hid so therefore, he thought that he found the land.
