Yes, he was. By the time Eyre reached the southeastern corner of Western Sustralia, he was in dire straits. Eyre was assisted by Captain Rossiter of the French whaling ship, the Mississippi, at a time when he and Wylie were exhausted and desperately in need of food. Rossiter took them aboard, fed them and gave the chance to recuperate for two weeks. He even organised for their horses to be fed and shod. The crew of the French whaling ship saved Eyre and Wylie - literally - and allowed them the chance to rebuild their strength in order to complete the journey.
