There are several possible explanations which both lead to the same result. The obvious conclusion is that Eve knew of God's instruction not to eat of the tree. She repeated almost word for word (see Genesis 3:2-3) the instruction which God had given in the previous chapter. (2:16-17). So Eve certainly knew it, the question is how.

One possible explanation is to realize that the account of the creation of man in Genesis 2:4 onwards is not necessarily chronological. Eve may have been present when the instruction was given to Adam.

The other way would be to understand that Adam told Eve what God had said. Anyway, God was in charge of the events and He would not let Eve remain unaware of the instruction critical to His plan.

Please NOTE: The following scripture is taken for the Original 1611 King James Version and may be very difficult to read for some. This is the original text and type setting of the Third English Translation of The Bible as created from 1607 - 1611 and known as the King James Bible or KJV.

Genesis 2: 16 - 28

16 And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat.

17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evill, thou shalt not eate of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof, thou shalt surely die.

18 And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone: I will make him an helpe meet for him.

19 And out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field, and every fowle of the aire, and brought them unto Adam, to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof.

20 And Adam gave names to all cattell, and to the fowle of the aire, and to every beast of the fielde: but for Adam there was not found an helpe meete for him.

21 And the LORD God caused a deepe sleepe to fall upon Adam, and hee slept; and He tooke one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in stead thereof.

22 And the rib which the LORD God had taken from man, made Hee a woman, and brought her unto the man.

23 And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shal be called woman, because shee was taken out of man.

24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shal be one flesh.

25 And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.

If you read these scriptures you will notice that God tells Adam that he is forbidden to eat of the tree and then latercreates Eve.

So, therefore, Eve was not around when God forbade Adam from eating of the fruit, as she wasn't even created yet according to the Bible.

The command not to eat of The Tree of Knowledge is given in Gen. 2:17, but NO command was EVER given not to eat of The Tree of Life! Therefor God clearly intended them to eat of The Tree of Life, but once they had eaten of The Tree of Knowledge that could no longer be allowed and they were both evicted.

What was the one limitation god placed on Adam and Eve's freedom in the garden of Eden?

In the Bible, in Genesis chapter 2, verses 16 and 17 - The Lord God commanded Adam not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
