At the end of World War I the allied powers forced the Germans to decrease the size of their army but when Hitler came to power he decided to ignore the allied powers and their demands and built up the German army to its original size, but the main source of the German military power was a long military tradition and intense rearmament from 1933 onwards.

It had the most effective army in Europe, although it was smaller than Russia's. It defeated Russia's army while almost defeating the combined armies of France & Great Britain. It most likely would have defeated the British & French (on the continent) except for the intervention of the United States. It's navy was the second largest and most powerful behind the British. It's industry was large, effective and productive. Overall a very powerful country and military.

Hitler had no power during World War One. He was a soldier, rather, a message runner near the front lines. He was enlisted in the 16th Bavarian Reserve for the German Army.

There are also facts that are coming to light, that Hitler may not have been as important as he claimed in the work he did during WWI. There is speculation, that he was actually a good 5 kilometers back from the front lines, and actually only ran messages between related groups rather than long distance routes as previously believed.

Hitler was not in control of Germany until 1934, when Paul von Hindenberg died. Only then was he in absolute power of Germany.
