The gospels tell us that Jesus spent most of his adult life in Galilee, and some time in Judah, whose capital city was Jerusalem. At the time of Jesus, there was no nation of Israel and had not been for approximately seven and a half centuries. The area that Israel once occupied had become known as Samaria, and Jews tended to avoid entering the region.

A:Israel no longer existed at the time of Jesus and had not existed for more than seven centuries, having been destroyed by the Assyrians in 722 BCE. In its place, they created the province of Samaria, home of the Samarians, or Samaritans. The people of the smaller southern kingdom of Judah sought to claim the legacy of Israel and, especially after the Babylonian Exile, often referred to themselves as Israelites, although we know them today as the Jews.

The invading Romans supported Herod, an Idumean, and installed him as king of a united empire that included Idumea to the south, all the way to Galilee in the north, although much of the fertile coastal plains remained part of the Roman province of Syria. After his death in 4 BCE, Herod's empire was broken up, with his son Archelaus getting Idumea, Judea and Samaria. The main city was the Jewish religious centre, Jerusalem, although Herod preferred to spend most of his time in the pagan coastal city of Caesaria.

Strictly speaking, no, because Israel had ceased to exist over 700 years earlier, after the Assyrian conquest. The former kingdom of Israel lay between Galilee and Judea and was known as Samaria at the time of Jesus.

If you are referring to the territory currently defined by the Modern State of Israel or the prior Kingdom of Israel, then yes. The entire Galilee region (where he spent much of his time preaching) is currently within Israeli borders. However, as there was no independent Jewish State during Jesus' time, he could not "go to Israel".

Not really, there was no Israel back then. Rather, Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea which is roughly where Israel, created in 1948 by United Nations mandate, now exists.
