Maat is a goddess of ancient Egypt.

Maat, with help from Thoth, weighed her feather and the heart of the dead. If the heart was heavy and outweighed the feather, it would be swallowed by Ammut. If it weighed the same, the soul was allowed to go on to the afterlife.

The ancient Egyptians believed in the afterlife. They felt you had to do good deeds while living so that the gods could weigh your heart. Good people had light hearts. Once you were judged by Maat, Osiris would let you in to the Land of Two Fields. Here you would have eternal happiness.
