Yes she was. In fact, she founded an order of nuns called the Missionaries of Charity.

The main function of the order is mission work around the world. As an adjunct to this religious activity, the order provides some small-scale services for the poor. This includes several hundred beds in Calcutta and elsewhere for the destitute dying, as well as several small schools in India. The order provides free food for the homeless in Calcutta, but this is a quite small operation compared to other, less well publicised charities working in the same area. However, most of the order's missions do not provide for the poor, but were set up to support the preaching of the faith.

A philanthropist is a person who seeks to promote the welfare of others especially through the donation of money to good causes. This is not quite what Mother did, she ran the "good cause" that philanthropists supported. Mother actually went out, rolled up her sleeves, and did what was necessary for the sick and dying, with or without money. She cleaned them, bathed them, etc.
