The Czech Republic dates only from 1993. Those territories (known as 'the Czech lands') which now constitute the Czech Republic had previously been a part of Czechoslovakia (1918-1938 and 1945-1992).
In 1938 Germany annexed those parts of the Czech lands (over a third) which they called the Sudetenland. In 1939 Germany invaded and occupied the rest of the Czech lands, which they called the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia.
A Czechoslovak government-in-exile operated in Paris 1939-40 and London 1940-45, while Czech partisans mounted resistance to the occupiers at home. Units of the First Division of the Czechoslovak Army fought in France in 1940 and Czech pilots flew with the British RAF in 1940-45.
Soviet Red Army troops finally defeated and expelled the Germans, entering the Czech capital, Prague, in May 1945.
