John Madison Lewis was never a slave owner. He was born in Alabama, moved to Forney Texas, started schools there, including the Lewis Academy. He served as a private in the Confederate troops in the Civil War. The Lewis High School was named for him in 1922. I think Lewis elementary was also named for him, or for his son Edward C. who headed up the Lewis Academy operation in Forney.
