He was from Maryland which did not join the Confederate States, but was at least a border state with strong ties to the south. It housed an extensive spy network working for the rebels, and many of its young men were Confederate soldiers.

There may have been some who applauded his act. But I think most understood that murdering Lincoln was only going to make things worse for them, causing the Yankees to be even more vindictive and eager to punish the south than they might have been. And they understood Lincoln was for quickly repairing the wounds and healing the separation now with the fighting ending. If Booth was such a hot-blooded southern partisan, he had had four years when he could have joined the Rebel Army and fought for what he believed in, like everybody else. Booth may have from time to time done some service for the Confederate Intelligence officers, but mostly he made piles of money acting, drank way, way too much, and dated lots and lots of girls.

Perhaps in his everday conversation, he was after all a southerner. He was also an actor that had lengthy professional study in elocution and he could adapt readily to many different roles.
