The bombs killed an estimated 200.000 people. But seeing the other option available, president Truman made the right decision:

  • He could block Japan out, and let the people starve. But this would kill many people as they believe in their emperor and won't give up.
  • He could also invade Japan, but this had an estimated 1 million American soldier deaths.
  • He could retreat, but this would allow the Japanese to kill for example many Chinese and take over, and this also gives a possibility of the Japanese trying to invade the US again.
  • And he could drop the atomic bombs and kill 200.000 people. Which would be the best option seeing the estimated death count.

From the viewpoint of the mothers of the day and the soldiers of the day Truman made the right decisions. The mothers around the US were screaming for the war to end because they were loosing their men. Many of the soldiers later came up to the men who were on the planes Enola Gay and Bockscar and the men who developed the bombs. They told them, "You sure save my life with those atom bombs. I would have been killed had I been with the Japanese invasion."

The Manhattan Project scientists did not like what the atom bombs did but they were glad the bombs motivated Emperor Hirohito to surrender thereby saving millions of Japanese lives and the lives of the Allied Forces (including the Russians).

Which President made the decision to drop the atomic bomb?

the 33rd President of the United States, Harry S Truman from Missouri.Franklin D. Roosevelt authorized the Manhattan Project, the massive undertaking by the US, Canada and Great Britain that created the first atomic "pile," the first sustained, controlled, man-made nuclear fission reaction, and the first atomic explosive device. Implicit in his authorization is his intent to use it against a foreign enemy. Roosevelt died just three months before the Trinity "shot," the first detonation of an atomic warhead in the New Mexico desert in July 1945.Harry S. Truman, FDR's vice president, had been essentially kept in the dark with regard to the atomic bomb until Roosevelt's death. Once he became president in April 1945, however, he was quickly apprised of the status of the bomb project, and he insisted on daily reports about it. After the Trinity "shot," Truman took the decision to use the two remaining bombs against Japan.

Who Is The Greatest U.S President?

We have had many great Presidents and many bad ones as well. So it is difficult to tell who truly deserves the rank of โ€œthe greatest Presidentโ€ but I will try without much bias. First off, Harry S. Truman was a fantastic and definitely underrated President. Truman became President when Franklin D. Roosevelt suddenly died. He served two terms in the U.S Senate representing Missouri and after that a few months as VP. Truman helped improve the economy though it was nothing like Eisenhower, Kennedy, Trump or Reagan. It was still improvements to a war rocked nation. Speaking of war Truman helped win and end World War Two. Though Germany was mainly defeated by President Franklin Roosevelt he finished the job with the aid of the Soviet Union. Trumanโ€™s decision to drop the atomic bomb was the tough but right decision. Though Truman did declare war in Korea is was probably the right thing and the US would get uninvolved soon after. Truman also had an 88 approval rating the highest approval rating of any president! Finally, Truman was an admirable guy and smart man. He is heavily underrated with FDR and Eisenhower right before and after but still was a great President.
