A man, George Whitney, invented softball in 1887.
In boys softball they use a bigger ball than the girls =)
softball started because they had baseball. the boys didn't like the girls playing with them. so the girls decided to create a game like baseball. the ball they decided to use was bigger and it was softer. they called it "softball". they just wanted a game that they could enjoy with out being "yelled" at by the boys. it ended up being a more orginized game. that is how softball started.

They certainly can; it is not illegal. Be aware that, by nature, there will be a drastic size of female population paired against the minuscule percentage of males. Having said that... once you are out of high-school, you may find more teams looking for a certain gender (or both, in some cases)-- it will depend on the severity and official'ity of the particular group.
In softball, the ball is bigger. Baseball pitchers pitch the ball overhand while softball pitchers pitch underhand. Baseball is more of a boys sport and softball is generally more for girls.
