Lord North was forced to resign after his failure to subdue the American colonies during the Revolutionary War. He actually attempted to resign several times during the Revolution, but George III refused to accept his resignation until it was absolutely inevitable. Still, his name will always be remembered in correlation with the minister who lost America.

Yorktown VA. American and French militaries cornered Great Britain, so British general Charles Cornwallis was forced to surrender, thus ending the American Revolution.
They supported the British army, and some fought alongside the British. But many were forced to flee their homes and farms because of threats and violence by the supporters of independence.
They forced the British out of the South.
British General Lord Cornwallis surrendered his forces to George Washington in Yorktown in 1781. Yorktown is located in Virginia.
