If made before midnight, December 31, 1968, it will not have a serial number. If made later, it will be clearly marked on the receiver.

They came in various barrel lengths and choke combinations. If it is not marked on the side of the barrel, you will have to pattern the shotgun to determine the choke

If the company name is marked exactly as you have written it, the gun was made between 1920 and 1948. The date will not be marked on the gun and it is probably not serialized so the exact year of manufacture cannot be determined.

A Stevens 79 20 gauge shotgun depends on the specific shotgun. This model can be produced over and over each year. Therefore, the year of the gun is based on the specific gun, not the type of gun.

J Stevens company was founded in 1864 and then bought by Savage in 1920. Therefore, if the gun is not marked Savage any where, it was made any where from 1864-1920.

Try looking it up in the" 2008 Firearms the collectors price & reference Guide" in the Library. Pages 1137 to 1140. You will have to find out what model you have by compairing the photos with your shotgun. This should give you an idea of the value.
