Was the earths axis ever straight?

Basically, if the Earth were not tilted, the same amount of sun would fall on all parts of the Earth each day of the year. The polar regions would continue receiving less solar energy than the tropics on each side of the equator, but the Arctic and Antarctic would not have times of the year when the sun never sets and times when it never rises. Also, each day of the year would see a little more than 12 hours of daylight and a little less than 12 hours of darkness

The sun is directly overhead. This occurs along the tropic of cancer during the summer solstice, and along the tropic of Capricorn during our winter solstice (though it would be the beginning of summer in that hemisphere).

In between the tropics the sun passes directly overhead twice a year.
