the only part that is real is when the officer is recording the basement and yes that is leatherface the guy really died and so did the camera man the part that is not real is the first scenes the evidence part

Tobe Hooper did get the idea for Leatherface from the real life serial killer Ed Gein. But Leatherface and Ed Gein share only a couple of very remote similarities: Ed Gein, like Leatherface, wore the skin of his victims like clothing (although he made an entire suit out of ladies' skin, complete with breasts and vagina, instead of just a face mask). Ed Gein, like Leatherface, gutted/mutiliated his victims' corpses, and then hung them up in his house. And Ed Gein, like Leatherface and his family, MAY have eaten some of his victim's remains (although this has never been proven).
Everything else is fictional. If you read about the Ed Gein case, you will notice that it could not be more different than The Texas Chainsaw Massacre movies. Thus, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is not based on a true story.
