The north didn't care about the slaves. When the war first broke out Abraham Lincoln said he would be willing to keep slavery if it meant that he could preserve the union. The war started off as a war of states rights and it turned into a war, and when the union was losing the war they had to appeal to slavery and pretend that was what the war was about to gain more solders and to get Europe to stay out of the war. So the north was for slavery as long as it benefited them and when it hurt them they were against it.
