The five ships were having many difficulties. All 5 ships were running out of food and water. I think (this is just my guess) that the crew of one ship got mad and tired enough of the trip. The one ship was overthrown. The crew of this one ship sailed back to where they ported off. At least that's what I would do in there position (actually I would pray to God to bring us to shore soon, because I'm Christian.)

Not a breach in the chain of command like the Bounty affair. Magellan was ashore and was attacked and murdered by Native Filipinos. One of his executive officers- Juan Sebastian De Elcano- then assumed command- and the task force finished its mission- sans Magellan. As Magellan did not survive the expedition, really Senor De Elcano should be crowned as the first circumnavigator. Surviving ship was the Victoria.
