It may be hard to imagine in the 21st century what things were like during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960's. Especially in the southern states, racial equality was just a dream to African-Americans. They could only use public restrooms if it was designated for blacks. They had to sit in the back of public transportation buses. They were even forbidden to use a 'white' water fountain.

Thank goodness times have changed for the better. It was a resounding victory for civil rights with the election of an African-American president. Dr. King would have been so happy.

Even though laws prohibited discrimination in 1960, there were behaviors and local laws that still separated the races. Examples were that people of color would be turned down for housing loans if they chose a house in the "wrong" neighborhood. Churches were segregated. Schools were segregated because of neighborhood schools rulings. Jobs were not available to the untrained but training was not available. Certain universities were still segregated.
In general the attitude of separate but equal was wide spread but America was waking up to the idea that it wasn't really true.

I can remember going to the theatre and doctor's office and black people had a separate area to sit apart from white people - I thought it was really weird, but I was a little kid and nobody listened to me ...

Answer Racial discrimination is when an individual or organisation discriminates or acts in predjudice against an individual or group based on his/her/their race. For example if a white person goes into a church that contains mostly black people and that white person is marginalised and not made to feel welcome, and deliberately excluded from activities because they are different (white) then that is racial discrimination.
