It's connected to the coolant tank. Mine was worked on by a previous owner, and isn't working, so the coolant warning is always on. Look for a wire coming from the tank.

It should reset itself when the coolant is back to the appropriate level as long as the sensor is working properly. If you look in the overflow reservoir and can see coolant, the sensor or wiring might be the problem.
Low coolant? bad thermostat? Heater core plugged, restricted, or airbound? Temperature control not working properly? Water pump not circulating coolant?
Then coolant doesn't flow through the engine block, and your motor is allowed to build up heat. If your thermostat works properly, it'll open up when the specified temperature is set, and coolant will flow in. If it's not working properly, then the heat will continue to build until you either shut off your motor or you blow a head gasket.
An inoperative temperature gauge will not alter how an engine runs, but the operator will not know if the water temperature has risen above normal without a properly working guage.
