There are many sights that claim to be free. Once there though, they are free after you pay a membership fee. I have found the Social Security Death Index very helpful in the search for death records. Another is the US Census if you are looking for older records. The Census is released after a 70 year interval. As of right now the most recent info is 1930. Next release is 2012. A word of warning, on both of the above sights there will be teasers that are there to distract you and send you to 'free sights' such as Intelus. There is also a genetic hunt sight sponsored by the Mormon church, Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. It is also free and you don't have to be a member of the Mormon faith to use the site.
