Slavery has occured since mankind stood upright. All tribes of all nations at some time used slave labor, including those referred to as "Native Americans", who enslaved captured members of other tribes. No country in the world can rightly claim to have never had slavery. In present times, it is mostly the "third world" countries who still practice physical slavery. Economic slavery is practiced mostly by dictatorships.
Slavery has always existed and is even around us in the world today. Right now there are more slaves in the world then there has ever been in earths history. There are an estimated 27,000,000 (27 MILLION) slaves in the world today; and that's insane! The question therefore when did slavery occur but more of when did slavery not occur.
Before that war the majority of states had outlawed slavery, primarily in the North thou discrimination did occur. The Emancipation Proclamation threatened to free the slaves who were in the south if they did not rejoin the union. So nothing outlawed slavery outright but each state legeslated for itself and after the war the south had it forced upon them.

The Kansas-Nebraska Act gave voters in those territories to either have their states be free of slavery or allow it. Kansas had a long border with slave state Missouri. There were strong feelings on each side of the slavery issue. Lack of law enforcement and high tensions among the people cause terrible violence to occur.
Plantation owners were outraged that slavery had been outlawed in the territories. People in the territories were angry that a new political party had been established. Many Americans disagreed with the Supreme Court decision to limit slavery in the territories. Opposing forces clashed because they disagreed about popular sovereignty and slavery.
Sectionalism in post-War of 1812 United States was based on peculiar institution, or slavery. This is something that is taught from first grade through college. The United States was divided, north and south, over the issue of slavery. Slavery was the reason for the Missouri Compromise among other agreements to even out slave and free states prior to the Civil War.

African slavery in Africa (enslaved by Portuguese and English). African slavery of Africans. Russian slavery of the poor. Chinese slavery of debters. You should clarify there were many movements in different locations. I guess we were all slaves at one point or another.
