The goldfish's origin is China. It was first bred there as pets around 960 AD -1300 AD it was soon introduced to Japan by 1500 AD , there fancy varieties were developed. Goldfish then soon spread to other countries such as Europe, Austrailia, and North America.

Goldfish are not wild animals, however what you could be referring to as "wild goldfish" may very well be the fish they descended from; the carp. The Carp in which goldfish descended originated in Ancient China.
