No, Life of Pi is a fictional story-- it says so right on the back cover of the book. It never says that...it says that it is "a grand-story telling profound exploration of ageless themes: faith and truth, fact and fiction..."
No, it was a made up story, but after reading the book. Pi, the castaway, actually does seem real.
The answer to this question will vary for every person who has encountered the story, as they each have their own unique life experiences to draw from.
pi is eternal
It is the inner conflict with himself. Does he look to survive, or does he stay true to himself.

The purpose of the dual stories in Life of Pi is not for there to necessarily be a true answer. What Martel is trying to do is make the reader take a leap of faith and decide for themselves which story they believe is true. He leaves just enough evidence for both sides of the story to seem credible yet incredible at the same time. Really the true story is whatever story you want to believe.
