Yes. At the beginning, listening audiences tended to be very small, or in most cases, zero.

This was primarily due to two main reasons:

1). There were almost no people who owned radio receivers.

2). Those who did had no place to plug them in.

Quality was always a problem. The signal drifted in and out and off frequency. They also consumed a large amount of power. And if the weather was bad, the signal would pick up static and other interference.

The craftsmanship was awesome though. I have several old free standing radios and they are truly works of art.

Size of the radios and the stability of the signal because the transitor whas invented some time later and radios need that to stavilizes the signal
