The last Opera to be written together by W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sulllivan was "The Grand Duke, or The Statutory Duel." The complex plot about a troupe of players deposing the stingy Grand Duke of Pfennig-Halbpfennig (a fictional central European country) was written in 1896. It's plot is repetitive, with two songs provided to explain each of several plot developments. Sullivan's music is slightly reminescent of the style later associated with Viennese light opera, as his work was changing to reflect changing times and tastes.
W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan wrote the following 14 operettas together.
Thespis, or the Gods Grown Old
The Sorcerer
Trial by Jury
HMS Pinafore
The Pirates of Penzance, or the Slave of Duty
Patience
Iolanthe
Princess Ida, or Castle Adamant
The Mikado, or the Town of Titipu
Ruddigore, or the Witch's Curse
The Yeomen Of The Guard
The Gondoliers
Utopia, Limited, or the Flowers of Progress
The Grand Duke, or The Statutory Duel
Gilbert wrote the words and Sullivan the Music. Both were ultimately knighted for their work. Each also wrote operettas with other collaborators, although those pieces have not remained as popular as the core of their joint work.
In addition, Gilbert wrote numerous plays and humorous poems. Sullivan wrote other orchestral and choral works that were well received at the time and gave him a reputation as the leading composer in the United Kingdom during his lifetime.
