Best Answer
DensityThis refers to particle density of fluids and compact(ed) solids like crystals, in contrast to bulk density of grainy or porous solids.
  • Aerometer liquids
  • Dasymeter gases
  • Gas collecting tube gases
  • Hydrometer liquids
  • Pycnometer liquids
  • resonant frequency and Damping Analyser (RFDA) solids

For the ranges of density-values see: Orders of magnitude (density)

The simplest way is to determine the mass and volume of whatever you want to know the density of.

However there are other methods as well such as those used by seismologists to calculate the relative density of different parts of the earth's interior. They measure the time it takes for a wave to reach a certain seismograph since density affects the speed of waves such as those generated by earthquakes.

Density isn't measured directly in one step. Taking a sample of the substance,

you have to measure its mass with one device, and then measure its volume

with different equipment, and then use these two numbers to calculate the

density.

With liquids you can use a hydrometer to measure the relative density. This is the density compared to water as 1. The hydrometer floats in the liquid and the relative density is given by how high up it floats. The old name for relative density is specific gravity.

The volume of a substance can be measured in volumetric glassware, such as the volumetric flask and ... A unit of three-dimensional measure of space that comprises a length, a width, and a height. ... If two water samples have different volumes, they still share a common measurement: the density. ... You first measure the volume by weighing how much water it displaces, then weight the thing. Divide the mass by the volume and you've got density.
