Timbuktu and Djenne were the centers for trade and Islamic learning in ancient Mali. Timbuktu was an intellectual and spiritual capital and a center point for spreading Islam throughout Africa in the 15th and 16th centuries. In its Golden Age, the town's numerous Islamic scholars and extensive book trade established Timbuktu as a scholarly center in Africa.
Ancient Timbuktu is a world heritage site. It was a thriving center of scholarship and was a center of Islamic scholarship under several African empires, had a 25,000 student university and scared Muslim texts, in bound editions, studied. Today the modern African city occupying a location in the Sahara. You can see it on Wonders of the African World a PBS special.
