France and England played a major role in Canada's early history. First Canada was a French colony (New France), used mostly for trapping furs and trading. However, after the French and Indian War, it became a British colony, which further shaped its history.

France and the United Kingdom both played major roles in the colonization of Canada, and the development of its culture and history.

While the Vikings settled briefly in Newfoundland 500 years earlier, it was the French who first built permanent colonies in Canada. In the 1600s, the French built a series of outposts in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, coastal Québec, and up the Saint Lawrence River as far as Niagara. The British built outposts in Newfoundland, and laid claim to Hudson Bay, but focused more on their Thirteen Colonies to the south.

During the Intercolonial Wars from 1689 through 1763, the British and French fought for control of the region, with the British ending up victorious. From that point on, British influence prevailed in Canada, with vast numbers of immigrants coming from England, Scotland and Ireland, but French cultural influence remained strong, particularly in Québec.

Today, the legacy of both French and British rule can be seen in Canada's governmental structure, language and culture.

What influenced Canada?

The United States of America. Canada has adopted more of American culture than any other nation due to their common history, the fact that the USA has 10X the population, 10X the money and power. Canada is also a protectorate of the United States because Canada has since the second world war reduced it's military and defensive ability to the point that it can no longer defend or ever patrol it's borders. Next most influential country would be China or India the countries most new Canadians are from. Most, or soon to be most, Canadians are First (born in Another Country) or Second (born in Canada) Generation Canadians. Their influence is already dominate in many areas of Canada and since Canada does not force immigrants to adopt Canadian cultures and beliefs their influence is much greater than it would be in other countries. European countries, such as Britain and France still have some influence but that has been declining for many generations. Now their influence is mostly historical.
