It's called a choke, and restricts the bore a few hundredths of an inch. Most are round, for hunting, but there are some called "duckbills" that spread the shot laterally for combat purposes, though they're not popular anymore because they didn't offer a significant advantage. There are fixed chokes, permanently part of the barrel. There are adjustable chokes, which turn to constrict. There are removable chokes, which set in place with a wrench.

How wide is the spread of 410 shotgun?

Depends on barrel length, choke, and size of shot used.

What is an accu choke?

System of changable shotgun choke tubes made by Mossberg. Accu Choke is their brand name. A shotgun choke is a means of reducing the bore size at the muzzle of a shotgun, to produce shot patterns that spread to a greater or lesser degree.

How will shot through a rifled barrel affect home invasion?

If the question relates to shooting regular shot pellets out of a shotgun which is fitted with a rifled barrel for purposes of home defense, then the answer would be "it will work fine". A home defense situation MUST entail engagement at close range since a home invader who is a significant distance away is not a threat and thus is not a valid target. When shooting a shotgun at close range, having the pattern spread quickly would improve the probability of a hit. A rifled barrel would impart a spin on the shot cup and thus to the shot column, causing the column to spread immediately after leaving the muzzle. If the question is about something else, you will have to improve the wording.

Can the police trace buckshot to a registered shotgun?

Not really. They can match the gauge and spread pattern to distance from the target and barrel length, but nothing conclusive.

Which barrel do you fire first in a double barrel shotgun?

Usually you fire the right barrel first. It's choke is normally a little open giving a wider spread of shot. You fire the second barrel which is normally a tighter choke at a target farther away. This tighter spread will be concentrated but spread because of the long range assuring more pellets hitting the target. Firing the right barrel at a greater range might have the target escape by having the shot pass by without hitting it because the pellets are spread too far apart.

Why do shotgun BBS spread when shot?

Unlike bullets, shotgun pellets do not spin when fired. The rifling in a rifle or handgun barrel spins the bullet as it travels down the barrel, giving the bullet stability in flight. Shotguns are "smooth-bore" - they have no rifling inside the barrel, just a smooth tube. Because of this, the pellets do not spin, and thus fly with a certain degree of randomness. To further increase the "spread", lead shot gets banged up against the inside of the barrel and other pellets while going down the barrel, making the pellets non-uniform or out-of-round, further reducing their accuracy and increasing spread. Many shotguns have interchangeable "choke tubes" to allow the shooter to control how little or how much the shot spreads out. However, shotguns do not "spread" as much as in movies. A normal-length (18+ inch) shotgun will produce a spread no larger than a cereal bowl from normal "combat" distances.

Why does a shotgun spread?

No rifling.

What is leanardos 7 barrel machine gun?

It was actually an 8 barreled gun. Each barrel was a small cannon, and the gun had 8-12 barrels. It looked a bit like a leaf rake, since the barrels spread out in a fan. Each barrel was a single shot muzzle loading gun- but you could shoot 8 times before reloading.

What does a choke do?

The choke increases the fuel to air ratio in a cold start situation by restricting air flow a cold engine requires more fuel to air ratio to run than a warm or at operaring temperature engine. Answer 2 The question may, of course, be referring to the choke of the barrel of a shotgun. Most shotgun barrels are narrower to a greater or lesser degree at the muzzle than at the breech. This is in order to make the shot more focussed and less spread out. Double barrelled guns will probably have each barrel with a slightly different choke. This enables you to choose the best shot pattern for the distance and the type of quarry.

What can a sawn off shotgun do to a human?

it will kill them mostly, but sawn off shotguns have a wider spread and less velocity then long barreled shotguns and need to be taxed if the barrel is under 18 inches

What is a skeet chokes?

A skeet choke is a screw in tube that is inserted in the end of a barrel of a shotgun, the main thing a skeet choke does is changes the spread pattern of the shot from the shell, since its a skeet choke it will make the spread very large so that you can hit the skeet easier.

What is the use of a savage super choke for the Stevens savage arms model 77A?

The Super choke is adjustable to allow the shooter the ability to shoot with an improved cylinder choke all the way to a full choke. A choke is a reduction in width of the barrel at the muzzle of the shotgun. This affects the rate at which the pellets spread after being fired. An improved cylinder choke is a slight adjustment so that the pellets will spread out like an ice cream cone shape while a full choke sends the pellets out with much less spread. This affects range and accuracy of the shot at various distances. The use is to be able to set the desired choke before taking a shot. A shotgun with a single choke setting cannot be adjusted by the user.
