Joan's job was to command the French army, that is, to lead, direct, and most

importantly, inspire it to fight and defeat the English invaders. She had help from some great French military commanders, like Count Dunois, the Duke D' Alencon, and Captain La Hire, but it was Joan who often insisted that the French attack, when these very commanders wished to do nothing but wait for reinforcements.

One of Joan of Arc's greatest quotes was, "Have good spurs! All of You!" Her

commanders asked her, do you mean for us to retreat? And Joan yelled, "No!

Chase them! For that you'll need good spurs!" This resulted in the famous Battle of Patay, in which the English were soundly defeated in an open field battle as they were retreating toward Paris, with over 2000 men killed and one of their commanders, Lord William Talbot, captured. This was on June 18th, 1429. The commander, Lord John Fastolf, was cited for cowardice in retreating

before the enemy in this battle and lost his order of the garter.
