Best Answer

Some of the best officers in the US Army had resigned to join the Confederates.

Big advantage in cavalry - most young men owned at least one horse, and were used to the riding and shooting way of life.

Rank-&-file were poor white trash who actively enjoyed a darn good fight.

The President did not have to face a General Election during the course of the war.

Home ground advantage - both tactically, and in terms of emotive war-mission.

(At the beginning) Prospect of aid from Britain and France.
