Mass is measured in kilograms.

Volume is measured in cubic metres, because the prefixes in cubic units don't match normal prefixes (1 m3 is one billion mm3 rather than one thousand) it is more normal to use litres.

Until 1964, the metric unit of mass and capacity were directly linked. A litre was defined as the volume of one kilogram of pure water at 4 deg Celsius and at a pressure of 760 millilitres of Mercury. With that definition 250 grams of water (under those conditions) would have occupied 250 ml. But that definition of a litre was abandoned in favour of 1 litre =1000 cubic centimetres. As a result, the above relationship is now only approximate.
