It varies depending on the type of treatment, but as an overall rule, you really shouldn't apply any types of poisons (herbal, organic, chemical, or otherwise) until the kitten is at least eight weeks old. I have fostered stray kittens in the past. Both the rescues and the vet told me to bathe them in the sink with a little bit of Ivory soap, rinse well, take care not to get it in their mouths or eyes, and follow up with a flea comb. Flea combs are cheap, and can be one of your best weapons. I found it helped to let the kitten soak in the warm water for a few minutes before rinsing them off. It helps to drowned some of the fleas. The kitten isn't going to care much for the soak, and you will probably have to keep a firm (but gentle) hand on them to keep them in the sink. Have a towel ready, and wrap them up as soon as they are rinsed. They get a chill easily. Hold them close to you to keep them warm, and then comb them out somewhere that does not have a ceiling fan or draft blowing on them.
Neuter your cat between 8 and 16 weeks to prevent unexpected pregnancies that can occur when waiting until the traditional 5 to 7 months. Research shows no additional health risks later in life associated with early-age neutering.
Kittens should not be deflead at birth. They will need to wait and be deflead about 6 weeks of age.
At the same age you would desex your child.
