The small intestine is the longest section of the intestines. It's called "small" because it has a narrower diameter than the large intestine.
The small intestine is the longest part of the digestive system, the colon is part of the large intestine which is shorter than the small intestine.
The iliocecal sphincterThe ileum is the last (and longest) portion of small intestine. It empties into into the cecum (the first part of the "large intestine") at the iliocecal junction. The iliocecal sphincter is a ring of invountary smooth muscle at this junction, controlling the passage of digestive contents from the small intestine to the large intestine.
the large intestine is 1.5 meters long, while the small intestine can be from 4-7 meters long. Though it is called the small intestine, it is actually the longest part of the digestive tract.
They have a small intestine because dogs are carnivores (they only eat meat). An animal with a large intestine digests fibre as well, which a dog does not eat, and therefore does not need a large intestine!
Interesting enough, the small intestine is actually longer than the large intestine--it's the alimentary canal's longest compartment! It is called 'small' because of its small diameter.
The intestine is long to maximize the surface area available for absorption, which is the primary function of the large and small intestines.
The large intestine is about 5 to 6 times the length of the animal.
The duodenum is the first portion of the small intestine. The jejunum is the middle portion of the small intestine. And the ileum is the last and longest portion of the small intestine, extends from the jejunum to the cecum of the large intestine.
