Grendel was outside the Mead Hall listening to the drunken customers bragging and keeping up a lot of noise. He initially did nothing but watch the revelry. However, two guards snuck up behind him, and proceeded to strike him. In retaliation, he not only killed the two guards who attacked him, but everyone in the hall.
