What are 3 different kinds of chemical reactions?

There are actually four different kinds of chemical reactions. (For our purposes, the "=" sign will symbolize the yield sign)

  1. synthesis reaction: when two or more substances combine

ex: A + B = AB

  1. decomposition reaction: this is the breakup of a substance

ex: AB = A + B

  1. single replacement reaction: this is when a single element with replace an element of a substance

ex: A + BC = AB + C

  1. double replacement: two compounds switch "partners" with the other compounds to form new substances

ex: AB + CD = AD + CB
