Not perfectly sure what you mean here, but a "fossil" is technically anything that is dug up (the hoe Granpa left in the field nine years ago could be a fossil). What we usually think of, though, is a mineralized fossil from long, long ago.
Some of these are tracks or impressions left in soft ground which later hardened. Others are copies of plants and animals whose bodies have slowly been replaced with minerals. Still others are casts of these plants and animals in cases where the bodies have decayed but they left reversed impressions in the ground where they lay. Is this what you meant?
