Religion, protection, and organization were three things that unified Rome. Now, if you are talkig about the unification of the Latin cities that lead to the formation of Rome, that is a different reasdon. I believe that the only reason theese cities unified was so that they could protect themselves froms the Etruscans and the Greeks.

After all wouldn't you want to protect yourself from a large military power right next door?
