There was the election and assassination of JFK, the assassination of RFK, the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. and his I Have a Dream Speech, The Civil Rights Act of 1964, the decolonization of Africa, the intensification of the Cold War through the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Vietnam War, the Prague Spring Revolution of 1968, the construction of the Berlin Wall, the Cultural Revolution of China and the growth of terroristic communism in South America, several African States and Northern Ireland, Student rebellions of the late 1960s, The calling of the Second Vatican Council, The Hippie Revolution, the popularization of rock music through the Beatles, Woodstock Music Festival, The Six Day War, The rise in feminism and anti war movements, the failure of China's attempts to modernize the economy through the Great Leap Forward.

In retrospect, the events of the mid to late 60s can be seen as a reaction to the rigid social norms projected society in the 50s and early 60s. The 60s saw leftist power rise outside of the Soviet Union and China and forever changed the way in which people think about the world around them.
