There were many battles fought during the four years of the US Civil War. Fort Sumter, South Carolina; Booneville, Missouri; Battle of Bull Run, Virginia; Battle of Dry Wood Creek, Missouri; Battle of Barbourville, Kentucky; Battle of Santa Rosa Island, Florida; Battle of Ball's Bluff , Virginia and Battle of Mill Springs, Kentucky are all battlefields from the civil war.
Within the US Civil War's mere four years in length, many of its battlefields are worth noting. When given the latitude to name eight of them, every student of the war has favorite battle sites. Here is a list of eight of the important ones:1. New Orleans. This was the South's largest city and the key to the Mississippi River and outlet to the Gulf of Mexico. The Union captured this vital city in 1862;
2. First Battle of Bull Run. Only 60 miles from Washington DC, this battle was the largest amount of troops ever assembled in North America at the time. It was an important Confederate victory that sent shock waves to the North;
3. Second Battle of Bull Run. Here at almost the same site as the first Bull Run battle, the Confederates led by Robert E. Lee defeated the Union General Jon Pope. This led the way to Gettysburg;
4. Gettysburg. The largest battle of the US Civil War. It took place in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania and was a loss for the South. Union General Meade led the Army of the Potomac to victory yet is not highly regarded today as a top general. One reason might be was that he had the chance to destroy General Lee's Army of Northern Virginia, but was unable to do so;
5. Battle of Shiloh. This took place in early 1862. It was an important victory for the Union in the Western Theater. This Tennessee battlefield is well preserved. At the time, it was the worst & bloodiest battle in the war;
6. Battle of Antietam. Here in Maryland in September 1862, General Lee lost a technical battle. His opponent, General George B. McClellan had a chance to destroy Lee's army but failed to do so.
7. Battle of Fredericksburg. Here in Virginia, the new Union leader of the Army of the Potomac, Ambrose Burnside suffered huge casualties by assaulting a fortified Rebel army. He would soon be replaced and Lee's forces won a stunning victory. The good news for the North was that the Army of the Potomac was not destroyed and its losses, large as they were, did not cripple Burnside's army;
8. Battle at Hampton Roads. This was a sea battle between two ironclads. The first time in history that ironclads fought each other. The invention of the "turret" on the USS Monitor was an innovation that caught on world wide. The battle was a draw.
