Depending on their rank, an English police officer is a 'Police Constable' (PC), Sergeant, Inspector, Chief Constable, Chief Inspector, etc. An officer may also be referred to as:

  • 'Bobby' or 'Peeler' - inspired by Robert Peel, the UK politician credited with creating the modern police force
  • 'cop' or 'copper' - thought to be inspired by early police uniforms that consisted of copper buttons, helmets or badges depending on the force
  • 'the fuzz' - which may refer to cops being 'fussy' or causing a 'fuss'
  • 'flat-foots' - which may refer to the amount of walking an officer would do
  • 'plod' - refers to walking slowly
