CFLs, or compact fluorescent lights, are an environmentally friendly alternative to incandescent light bulbs. Typically a CFL is powered by a ballast which sends current into the glass envelope filled with halogen gas. 'Halogen' is not actually a gas in itself but refers to a family of gasses that includes chlorine, bromine, astatine, fluorine, and iodine. As the electric current travels from the ballast into the envelope, the gas becomes exciting and emits photons. Interestingly, without the the white coating inside a CFL, known as a phosphor coating, you would not be able to see the light produced. It is only once the light passes through the phosphor coating that it becomes a wavelength visible to the human eye.

Fluorescent lights are made from very thin glass lined with phosphors. A very small amount of Mercury is encased in the glass. This type of lighting is very fragile and very economical to use. The lighting turns on and off just like any other light bulb.

CFLs, like all fluorescent lamps, contain mercury as vapor inside the glass tubing. Most CFLs contain 3-5 mg per bulb, with the bulbs labeled "eco-friendly" containing as little as 1 mg.

They are compact fluorescent lights, which are about 5 times more efficient than incandescent lights. For example a 20-watt CFL replaces a 100-watt incandescent.

Compact fluorescent bulbs used to be all or nothing. They couldn't be dimmed. Most cfl lamps (bulbs) are this kind. However, special cfl bulbs are now being marketed, at a higher price, that can be dimmed by a normal dimmer switch previously used for incandescent bulbs. However, not all dimmer switches work with these newer dimmable cfl lamps.
