Protestants are pretty much any Christian denomination other than the Catholics. However some assume that they are mostly members of the Church of England, ie. the Anglicans.
In general terms, it is the denominations that have developed from the split with the Catholic Church which began with the Reformation. Some of the main ones are the Lutherans, Reformed churches, Methodists, Anglican, and Presbyterian amongst others.
Protestants are a branch of Christianity. They are called Protestants because they protested against the Roman Catholic church (think 1500s), which was saying that you could buy salvation from them, instead of getting it from Jesus. The Roman Catholic church has since gone through it's own reformation, so it doesn't do that anymore, but the point is that Protestantism was formed then, and is still here today. Some of their beliefs are different from Catholicism, but they still hold the basic parts that make them part of Christianity.
A Protestant is a Christian who does not belong to the Roman Catholic church.

Protestants are called protestants because they PROTESTED against the catholic church because Henry viii was catholic but he wanted a divorce but the catholics would not let him, so he started his own church( church of England) and they were called the protestants, also you can not be protestant and catholic.
The Protestants and the Catholics have fought for many years in Ireland but it was for political reasons rather than religious ones. The Protestants wanted the head of the Church of England to rule which is the King or Queen of England. There isn't any fighting now.
It was if and if but protestants were moving fast BUT...There were tons of catholics pouring in (like the protestants). But the protestants were ruling Ireland (mostly like Quakers etc.. etc...)
