Did the Persians defeat the Athens?
There were many battles between Persia and Athens. Athens, or the Greeks in general, deflected all Persian invasion attempts. During the Greco-Persian Wars, significant battles include the Battle of Marathon, where a decisive Athenian victory was won and the First Persian invasion of Greece (492-490 BCE) was beaten back. During the second Persian invasion of Greece (480-479 BCE), the Persian invasion was also deflected. The Persians ultimately did not defeat Athens.

Did Sparta or Athens save Greece by defeating Persia?
Both were in a coalition of southern Greek city-states which defeated a Persian invasion 480-479 BCE. Sparta led the alliance at the start, but it left it to Athens in the second half of the 50-year war in which there were dozens of sea and land battles. After too many losses, the Persians agreed to peace and left the Greek cities to go back to their usual fighting each other.

How did the Persians feel when they were defeated?
After 50 years of warfare trying to enforce peace amongst the Greek city-states, the Persians agreed in 449 BCE to peace and left the Greek cities to go back to destroying each other, and turned their full attention to maintaining peace and prosperity within their empire. They intervened 60 years later, imposing the 'King's Peace' to stop these disruptions spilling over into their empire.

What were the two major battles in the second Persian war?
When was the war between the Spartans and Persians?
The Second Persian War was fought in 480 and 479 BC, but the Spartans were not alone. They were allied with the Athenians and most of Greece in fighting the Persians. I will add only a little known fact, more Greeks fought on Persian side than on Greek. But those who fought were mainly northern Greeks. Another View: The so-called 'Second' Persian War is a fabrication. The Persian War lasted 499 to 449 BCE. It was in several phases- Ionian Revolt, Persian punitive expedition against Eretria and Athens, Persian invasion of mainland Greece, and the Delian War. There was no war between Sparta and Persia - Sparta was part of a coalition to repel the Persian invasion of mainland Greece 480-479 BCE. Although various cities provided army and naval forces for the Persian invasion in that war, it was about a quarter of the size of the defending Greek city-states forces.

Where did the second Persian war take place?
The wars between the Persians and Greek city-states lasted for fifty years 499-449 BCE. There were no First, Second Third etc. It began with the failed Ionian Revolt 499-493 BCE, followed by a Persian failed 490 BCE punitive expedition against Athens and Eretria for interfering in the Revolt, followed by a failed Persian invasion of Peninsular Greece to bring it within the Persian Empire 48o-479 BCE, followed by a series of battles between Persia and various coalitions of Greek cities in the Eastern Mediterranean 478-449 BCE, then a peace when the Persians gave up. If you can perceive First, Second etc Persian Wars in this, good luck. It is terminology used by people who dont't take the trouble to understand what really went on.
