The river current starts wearing down the rocks in its path or on its banks. Small fragments of the rocks break off and are carried down-river. This process proceeds very slowly and usually takes many many years (thousands) for an appreciable quantity of the rock to get eroded. Answer Much depends on the speed of the water that is moving in the river. Fast moving streams and rivers when flooding can cause the movement of huge boulders. Slow moving waters can only carry suspended fine particles. Erosion refers to the moving of particles from one place to another place. Moving water provides the force necessary to move those particles and is responsible for the bulk of erosion that takes place on the planet.

River drops its load in the middle and later stage of its flow. Hence the features like ox-bow lake are found in the middle stages and deltas are found at the mounth of river. Whereas in the early youth stage its main action is in erosion.
