The advantages of a circuit breaker are:

they are smaller in size than fuses

better versions may have electronic trips so they can adjust trip curve to suite circuit design

easier for end user to reset (no touching live parts)

no waiting to reset (as with fuses - spare must be found)

no cost associated with resetting unlike cost of replacement fuses

easier when ground fault protection is needed

The disadvantages of a circuit breaker are:

they are more expensive than fused switches

when a circuit breaker trips, you lose all power (with fuses you only lose that phase)

harder to coordinate fault selectivity

harder and more costly to obtain high short circuit interrupting capacities

There are no disadvantages of circuit breakers. If you have fuses in your home, one time or another you surley have replaced them. Circuit breakers only need to be turned back on. No disadvantage there.

AnswerThe main disadvantage is that a circuit breaker is a mechanical device, and all mechanical devices can go wrong. Fuses, on the other hand, are 'fail safe' devices; if they fail, then they cut off the current.

One disadvantage of breakers: trip rating are affected by the air temperature around them. Breakers are slower to clear a fault, than fuses.

no disadvantages. advantages: keep from being electrocuted, keep wires from melting and burning your house down, protecting appliances from destruction, etc

Comment

Circuit breakers are designed to protect cables and appliances, NOT people! To protect people against electrocution, you need a residual current device (ground-fault interrupter).

Advantages:

a. They are compact, reliable and have longer life.

b. There are no fire hazards

c. There is no generation of gas during and after operation

d. They can interrupt any fault current. The outstanding feature of a VCB is that it can break any heavy fault current perfectly just before the contacts reach the definite open position.

e. They require little maintenance and are quiet in operation

f. Can withstand lightning surges

g. Low arc energy

h. Low inertia and hence require smaller power for control mechanism.

Circuit breakers are resettable whereas fuses must be replaced. In addition, there is very little risk of shock when resetting a circuit breaker (at line voltages).

+++

Even less risk of shock if you replace the fuse or re-set the circuit-breaker, properly...

circuit breakers do not have to replaced unlike fuses where when they detect high current the metal melts and have to be replaced.

What gas is used in vacuum circuit breaker to quench the arc?

Sulpur Hexa-Fluoride(SF6) is the gas used to quench the arc in a Vacuum circuit breaker.SF6 is a inert gas and is in-organic,colorless,odorless,non-flammable gas used as an outstanding electrical insolater.AnswerAs its name suggests, the arc is extinguished within a vacuum. No gas is involved.

What is the difference between transformer and transwitch unit?

Transwitch unit is a flameproof(FLP) wheel mounted transformer used in underground coal mines with inbuilt breaker on primary side and a protection chamber with circuit breaker on secondary side for overload and earth leakage provision. It can be moved easily from time to time as working face on mine advances. "flame proof apparatus" means an apparatus that can withstand without injury any explosion of the inflammable gas that may occur within it and can prevent the transmission of flame such as will ignite the inflammable gas which may be present in the surrounding atmosphere.

What are the disadvantage of technology?

What are the disadvantages of technology?there are non No, there is...technology can make people lazier; like children playing on the computer instead of studying, technology can make pollution; the smoke or gas of factories and cars, technology can harm the environment. The advantages and the disadvantages of technology are simple. A very good advantage of technology is that we can find out things about the solar system , or maybe we can find cures for cancer, or the swine flu. But also there are many disadvantages. Like it may cost a lot of money to get the technology to find out these things, or the answers or discoveries that the technology gives us, may not be always correct. Terrerist can use these technologies in destroying cities/towns.Everything in this world has advantages and disadvantages. What makes the difference is how to apply them properly, correctly.

Will an auto reset circuit breaker work in your trucks fuse box If so you would you need a 12v 20A breaker for your 20 amp fuseThe fuses keep blowing on your S-10 seconds after you put them in?

Why don't you go to a mechenic shop and have them fix the problem. The risk is if you put a bigger fuse or same fuse and keep blowing sooner or later you will blow some more expensive component, there is also the chance that could lead to a fire on the electrical system, and trust me sparks and gas they don't go along very well.

What is the difference between Air circuit breaker and Vacuum circuiut breaker?

"Air" and "Vacuum" describe how the breaker extinguishes the arcing current. An Air breaker opens far enough that the dielectric strenght of air is enough to extinguish the arc. A vacuum breaker's contacts are in a vacuum. Oil breakers use oil. SF6 breakers use SF6 gas to extinguish the arc.

What can happen if the gas pressure in SF6 CB is dropped below the specified level?

SF6 is used to increase the dielectric strength of the gap in the circuit breaker. If the gas pressure is too low, the dielectric strength will be inadequate to break the voltage applied across the breaker contacts. This means electricity will continue to arc across the contacts when opened, causing the breaker to heat up and likely fail catastrophically (explode). Most gas breakers have low gas alarms and trip contacts. If there is no way to bypass the breaker, a low gas trip contact can be used to open the breaker before the gas pressure gets too low to allow openning.
